Here’s something I didn’t expect to see today (or ever). The new video for the Steve Malkmus and The Jicks song “Senator” features Jack Black as the Senator, snorting coke and kissing babies. Also, Gary Cole pops up doing his Gary Cole thing.

Anthony Fantano over at The Needle Drop weighs in with a band that has become inseparable from October and Halloween: The Misfits. With their catchy punk hooks and absurdist, sci-fi/horror themes, The Misfits have definitely left their unique mark on punk rock.
In this clip from a Primus live-show, lead singer and bass-player extraordinaire, Les Claypool, takes this Metallica classic and adds his own brand of Slap-Bass to it in that very special way that only a band like Primus can.

Instrumentation is still tight, but you get the feeling that this would have made a better EP than a full-album. The whole middle of the album feels like filler between an excellent front and book-end.

This is as close to a straightforward release as you’re likely to get from The Flaming Lips these days. Details on if the LP will be JUST a special limited edition RSD item or if that’s just the general release date have not been released.
These three songs hearken back to the height of mid-90s synthpop. A niche reference to be sure, but one that has it’s place and shines with a luster better than most for those in the mood for it.
