What The Hell Is ‘Rocket Juice And The Moon’?

Why it’s only Damon Albarn’s other, other, other side project with Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers is all.

According to Pitchfork:

Damon Albarn, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Fela Kuti/the Good, the Bad, & the Queen drummer Tony Allen have a new group, Rocket Juice and the Moon. This weekend, the group debuted material at a series of live events in Europe called “Another Honest Jon’s Chop Up”, which is a spin-off of Albarn’s Honest Jon’s record label. Other performers at the Chop Up included Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Theo Parrish, and the Malian musician Fatoumata Diawara.

Besides having a terrible name, the band have put up a series of songs on Youtube for sampling. To be honest, they’re not as bombastic as you might have been expecting from a band with THAT name.

Sample live cut “Poison” is pretty jamming and ambient with sparse, flighty vocals and buried instrumentation. It’s decent stuff to be sure. I’m actually awaiting more cuts from this project and that’s definitely something I never thought I’d be saying about a band called Rocket Juice And The Moon.

Halloween…

This sunday night. 4 hours of free-form blood curdling zombie killing bone chilling mayhem coming to your radio dial..

you can listen at 9pm on 107.1 The Peak (stream at www.1071thepeak.com) and at 11pm on 105.5 WDHA (stream at www.wdhafm.com) or via the tune-in radio app for iphone and android

Both shows will be different, but the theme is the same, ghosts, goblins, zombies, vampires, death and the devil as we celebrate the Devil’s Holiday.

Here’s a little bit of info, did you know my theme song is part of horror movie folklore? Anything Anything by Dramarama was in the movie NIGHTMARE on ELM STREET 4, in two key scenes, including the pivotal Alice gets her Power Scene (yes i typed that with a straight face, as if the 4th installment of any horror film would have a pivotal scene, considering the main villian never dies anyway) you can watch that scene here

and there was also a 45 record with a Freddy Picture sleeve which is quite rare..here’s a pic of it:

Björk & Dirty Projectors’ Mount Wittenberg Orca Gets A Label Release

While Mount Wittenberg Orca was quietly self-released in digital format in 2010, the EP finally received a CD and vinyl release this week, through Domino Records. Last year, the musical partnership between Björk and Dirty Projectors was something no one really expected. But it just makes sense. They both create unconventional music with unique vocals that pushes boundaries. Take Björk’s Medulla, and Dirty Projectors’ The Getty Address for example. You won’t hear anything like them. Put the two together and you get something truly special. Perhaps because of its official label release, Mount Wittenberg Orca will draw more attention this time around.

Check out “On and Ever Onward” from Mount Wittenberg Orca.

Parenthetical Girls – A Note To Self

Parenthetical Girls is a relatively unknown experimental indie pop band out of the West Coast. Their music is akin to acts like Xiu Xiu, Dirty Projectors and even The Smiths. They’ve recently released their latest single “A Note To Self,” which can be streamed below. It’s a sample of whats to come, as the band prepares to put out their new EP, Privilege pt. IV: Sympathy For Spastics on November 1st

If you like what you hear, you can pre-order Privilege pt. IV: Sympathy For Spastics on the Parenthetical Girls website. Band member Amber Smith will personally hand number all 500 physical copies of the album, with her own blood. That’s some very strange dedication. But Parenthetical Girls embrace the strange. Just watch their unconventional video for “Careful Who You Dance With.” Weird is a good thing.

So tonight at the Studio at Webster Hall, one of the biggest bands in the world will be playing a a room the size of a suburban basement, and one lucky fan will get the option to buy a ticket at cost ($23.94).

some simple rules: you must be 19 or older. You must be able to be at the venue by 9pm. you must have $23.94 to pay for the ticket.

Because there are so many people i know that need a ticket for this, i don’t want have to choose favorites amongst friends and fans, so i’m doing a contest, and i’m not even looking at who submits. my assistant will put all of the correct entries will into textmechanic’s random line picker go here to see how it works and whatever name is generated that’s the winner.

you do need to qualify by answering this question, correct answers make the submission list, incorrect answers are thrown out..

since I am a radio DJ, here’s a question that involves a famous NYC CLUB and one of the most influential radio DJ’s of all time:

Name the song that legendary DJ John Peel once decribed as the perfect song that was covered by Green Day at the most influential music club in NYC Punk history..

you must name the song and who originally did it.

send your answer to anythinganythingrusso@gmail.com

include your answer in the header and your name in the body of the email.one entry per email address, multiple entries will be voided out. contest begins at 11:30am and entries accepted until 12:15

Download The New Virtual Boy Remix “Doom II”

Need some good background music for that Halloween party? Sick of using boring, old ambient boos and screams? Electronic duo Virtual Boy have you covered.

Their new, free remix of their track “Doom,” inspired by the classic first person shooter game, is the perfect mix of electronic beats, haunted ambiance, and unsettling noises; done-up just subtly enough that it’s fun-not-frightening.

Check out the original version of “Doom” below and download the remix over at Bandcamp.

Brian Wilson Discusses The Upcoming SMiLE Box Set With BBC Radio 4

Next Tuesday the long-awaited Beach Boys SMiLE Sessions box set will be released. In advance of this, BBC Radio 4 has conducted an interview with Brian Wilson detailing a bit of the curio and struggle involving the pressure to make a hit song for a label, behind the scenes audio, the drugs used during recording what would be one of rock and roll’s greatest unfinished albums.

MF DOOM And Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood Team-Up On Lex Compilation

This is the payoff we’ve been anticipating ever since Thom Yorke remixed DOOM’S “Gazillion Ear” back in 2009.

It seems the Radiohead duo and the chrome-plated masked rapper will be collaborating on a track for the upcoming LEX Records compilation celebrating their 10th birthday.

The compilation is called Complex, and also includes contributions from Gruff Rhys’ and Boom Bip’s Neon Neon project, Boom Bip solo, and Doseone and Fog’s Crook&Flail project, among others. It’ll be made available digitally on a week-by-week, track-by track basis until mid-January, at which point the whole set will be released on picture disc vinyl.
