I Call Bullsh*t On The “27 Club”

Ok, so let me get this straight, any musician who dies under any circumstances and is 27 years old gets admitted to the “27 Club”, like it’s some sort of career achievement? And really people, a “club” for those who died? Would the media classify those who died serving our country in a war, part of a “club” or those who perished on 9/11 as part of a “club”, of course not. Those who fought in wars defending our freedom or those who senselessly were taken away from us are heroes and victims, not “club” members.

So let’s end this silliness about the “27 Club”, which was concocted by some stoner in the early 70’s, to bring forth a coincidence of four prominent rock figures who died in a two-year period, who all happened to be age 27.  All of which had achieved legendary status:

Brian Jones, founding member of the Rolling Stones.
Jimi Hendrix, one of the greatest guitarists of all time
Janis Joplin, groundbreaking female vocalist
Jim Morrison, the Doors

When Kurt Cobain killed himself, the media added him to this “club” as if it was some way to connect Cobain to the others. And ooh, here’s a coincidence, Kurt played a lefty guitar and was from Seattle, and so was Jimi Hendrix. Ooh, that’s freaky!

And 17 years after Cobain’s death, Amy Winehouse has died at age 27. And the comparisons to Janis Joplin have started. Based on this pattern in another 17 years some 10 year old kid who is somewhere learning guitar or writing poetry, will either end up as a founding member of a huge band as a guitarist, or he’ll front a different big band, but regardless, he’s dead at 27.

Yeah right.

The Playlist for the Final Show that never happened….

On June 21st when it was announced RXP had been sold, we all knew right away that the format would be switched. At that time I began planning for a final anything anything show on RXP. Based on all of the info we were getting, that last show would have been July 24th or July 31st, to be safe i had planned for the final extravaganza to be on July 17th, and if the show went on after that, we would have tried to top the previous one. As the station came to an end, i have heard that a few people supposedly close to me had known that July 10th would be our last show and opted not to tell me. So be it. We had a great show on the 10th, a great playlist, some great banter, a great instudio guest and even a phone call from Joan Jett to wish us well as we signed off. The show that would have aired on the 17th would have built on that as we were pulling out all of the stops for the last show. Even though it didn’t happen, here’s the playlist, utilize theatre of the mind to enjoy the show as you read it..and maybe you’ll figure out who the special call ins are….

Some Local appropriate closing songs…

Sadly, RXP has ended due to the sale of the station. Oddly enough a station that was once called New York’s Rock Experience (don’t get me started on why it was stopped being marketed as that) , ended not once but twice and both times with songs by English artists, first on Thursday night during Rich Kotite’s final show and last DJ voiced segment, he chose to end with the Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” and then on Friday as the station transitioned to it’s musical stunt before it turns to a news talk station. the last RXP song was the Who’s “Long Live Rock”

This got me thinking about some cool local artists that might have had songs worthy of the end of what was once called New York’s Rock Experience (once again, please don’t get me started on why it stopped being called that, only Kotite knows)

Here’s a bunch of songs by a bunch of local artists, that might have been cool to sum up RXP and the sale and format switch, what do you think?

This song says it all

LOST PROPHETS IN VAIN

I’m so sad to hear you’ve lost your way
But I am all around to hear what you say
coz’ I believe you still got faith in yourself
To be what you are not someone else

Used to be the king of the underground
And everyone was hung up within your sound
Well I believe that’s all still inside your head
To be what you are for the living dead

Why can’t you remain, let it all shine through
Lost prophets in vain, shine a light on you
There’s nothing more to sacrifice

I’m so sad to hear you’ve lost your way
Since I’ve split myself in two, to be me and you
Coz’ I believe you still got faith in yourself
To be what you are and not something else

Why can’t you remain, let it all shine through
Lost prophets in vain, shine on me and you
There’s nothing more to sacrifice

There’s nothing more to sacrifice
There’s nothing more to realize

Why can’t you remain, let it all shine through
Lost prophets in vain, shine on me and you
There’s nothing more to sacrifice

No there’s nothing more to sacrifice
There’s nothing more to realize
